1887
Phylloxera devastated the Penedès region and meant replanting all the family vineyards. Manuel Raventós was one of the 'seven sages' who finally discovered a remedy to the phylloxera disease which had destroyed vineyards throughout Europe in the 19th century.
Even in those challenging years Manuel received recognition for his work, winning a gold medal at the Barcelona World Fair in 1888.
1895
The new winery construction began, following Manuel's visionary plans for excavating extensive underground cellars, to ensure the perfect conditions for ageing sparkling wines. Manuel called in enlightened architects and designers to submit their vision of his grandiose plans.
At that time, Codorníu’s annual production amounted to just one hundred thousand bottles.
1897
The Queen Regent María Cristina granted Codorníu the title of ‘Purveyor to the Spanish Royal Household’. Since that time, Codorníu has always been a supplier to the Spanish Royal Family.
Codorníu exported outside Spain for the first time and received their first international recognition for the quality of their cavas.
1898
Manuel Raventós announced a competition with the brief of illustrating the elegance behind Codorníu.
Renowned Spanish artists such as Casas, Utrillo, Tubilla and Junyent produced beautiful posters which still resonate today and form an important part of the Codorníu cultural heritage.
